Royal Death Overkill

From Facebook Archives

8 September 2022 at 14.29
I've received an email "following the sad death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Saturday's meeting will be cancelled."

I wanted to reply directly (didn't, but shared with some others who would have attended) as follows:-
"For Goodness Sake!
How does the the death of Her Majesty impinge at all on our activities?
What are we, who may have had to rearrange our diaries, supposed to do instead?
Lie prostrate with grief holding a damp handkerchief to our leaking eyes?
Read improving books?
Don't think I didn't have a great respect for
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, especially her work ethic.
She exemplified carrying on with what needs doing despite the circumstances, continuing to deal with red boxes whilst in mourning for HRH Prince Philip and until days before her death.
And my goodness there are a lot of things that need doing in the country at the moment.
If there is anyone struck with grief due to the death of Her Majesty then they have my sympathy, but really life and work goes on.
Yours puzzled
Bentonbag”

Miss Doozer  HOW DARE YOU NOT BE LYING PROSTRATE RIGHT NOW CRYING INTO A JUBILEE TEA TOWEL!!!!

Bentonbag  I must admit that in knit&natter this morning I marked the occasion by knitting a pair of wings for the HM I made LDNorthEast for the Jubilee, she's sitting angelically under the display tree.  I'm hoping she can go on top of the Xmas tree, but more tasteful voices might prevail.
Miss Doozer   I approve of that.  I was going to put a black ribbon in Charlie's mane then I realised you can't see it against the rest of the black pony and we're not going out anyway because he's lame.
Miss Doozer  Good excuse to get out of a meeting though?
Bentonbag  Yes, but those organising the meeting prefer not to have democratic discussions and people asking them questions, so stuff that should have been covered has been kicked down the road again.
Mr Earth  Agreed.
Ms Delune  Luckily for us we’re covered but the performative mourning is going to cost those in the events sector a week’s wages plus, and those on UC will be penalised due to the minimum income floor: a closed Parliament means they can’t do anything to address that.  Can’t imagine anyone has savings so soon after covid.
I admired her in part because she was the Queen of ‘keep calm and carry on’, not pointless competitive weeping that leaves people short on food.
Mr Colliery  I was looking forward to going to the East Anglian Traditional Music Day in Stowmarket tomorrow, but it’s been called off owing to several venues being unavailable due to “Royal Demise Protocols”. What?
Mr Currynapper  Mr Colliery: the protocol is apparently that it's up to the event organiser what they do.
It's so you can all go and stand outside Buck House gates to watch, er, nothing at all.
Mrs Currynapper  As I commented in an earlier post, I volunteer at a local performance venue.  The guidance we have been given is that cancellations and closures are up to the discretion of the individual organisation.  We have shows at the weekend, the promoters have said they are happy to go ahead so that is what is happening.  We have had no customers complaining or telling us they won't be coming.  The main calls were people checking that shows were still on.  We do plan to close on the day of the funeral as the conference being held has been cancelled.
Bentonbag  GOV.UK  The Demise of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II: National Mourning Guidance
"Major Events, Entertainment & Sports
There is no obligation to cancel or postpone events and sporting fixtures, or close entertainment venues during the National Mourning period. This is at the discretion of individual organisations. As a mark of respect, organisations might wish to consider cancelling or postponing events or closing venues on the day of the State Funeral.
They are under no obligation to do so and this is entirely at the discretion of individual organisations.
If sporting fixtures or events are planned for the day of the State Funeral, organisations may want to adjust the event timings so they do not clash with the timings of the funeral service and associated processions. As a mark of respect, and in keeping with the tone of National Mourning, organisers may wish to hold a period of silence and/or play the National Anthem at the start of events or sporting fixtures, and players may wish to wear black armbands."
Ms Delune  Absolutely.  People are jumping in that bandwagons left right and centre though- weirdly even markets which people rely on for cheap food   I get funeral day absolutely (praying it’s the Monday as there’s a meeting on the Tuesday about my son that’s taken me two years to pull everyone together for)
Miss Doozer  The T20 Eng v India women's cricket is still on.
Mr E Twin  I thought cancelling today's racing was a particularly incongruous mark of respect
Bentonbag  Definitely.  Black armbands would have done the job just as well, with much less inconveniece to all.
Bentonbag  Or even inconvenience.
Bess Cavalier  The meeting I was clerking on Thursday evening was opened and adjourned to goodness knows when.  The three meetings I should have been clerking this coming week have all been postponed as well as the official handing over of our Letters Patent conferring city status on MK - although I get why that's been postponed as the Lord Lieutenant is probably a bit busy at the moment.
