Care Package Budget

From Facebook Archives
28 February 2018

And the good news is Ferretfingers’ enablement officer has swung it that £2k of his care package budget can be spent on respite weekends with LD:NorthEast.  That's using the funds left over after paying for his weekly days at Rising Sun Farm and Gary Mather Centre.

Not enough for another day a week but all rolled up together and we've enough for two or three weekends.

Woolerwoman  That's really good! That bit of flexibility has its uses.
Bentonbag  Looking back it’s a whole year since I instigated the process of getting Ferretfingers’ care package and payments sorted out.  In that time the local authority’s ‘system’ has changed at least twice, forcing the enablement officer to” input everything again” and/or “wait until it’s fixed so we don’t have to input it all over again”.
The original enablement officer has been off sick several times (don’t blame him) and has now vanished and/or been replaced.  That being said both the enablement officers we are in contact with are known to and rated by staff at LDNE. I don’t blame the front line workers.  I blame the people forcing local authorities to squeeze a quart out of a pint pot.
Woolerwoman  What a time you've had.  It's not just stupid it's cruel.
Bentonbag  His services have continued, and been paid for, in the mean time. BUT it's all up for review in July again, or maybe not, you never know .....

Additional Information and Update

By the way that rolling it up and “swinging it” was at my suggestion; the local authority would have been quite happy for the money left over after paying for two days a week at a day centre was left unspent and in their bank account.
When Ferretfingers was first assessed for a care package by the local authority he came out with 150 “points” worth £150 per week to be spent on services.
That was some ten years ago.
My needs as his carer have also been assessed and fed into the care package budget.
He still has 150 points.
They are still worth £150.
In the meantime service provider costs and charges have gone up.
Care workers need to be paid a living wage however much local authority finance departments try to squeeze their employers.
Also, because Ferretfingers is in receipt of PIP and ESA he is expected to pay towards his budget.
This currently stands at £22.18 per week, and whilst the budget has not gone up over the years the amount he has to pay has.
We are in the fortunate position to be able to pay for some respite and outreach work from our own funds.
Many, I’d guess most, other families caring for a disabled or autistic person do not.

History Repeating

Sometimes it's easier to communicate with Ferretfingers in writing.

This is from yesterday evening.

 ***

The news recently has been causing considerable upset.

On Thursday night, just before bedtime, Ferretfingers plonked himself next to me and wailed "I'm upset by the Ukrainian invasion."

We had a even more noise and stimming (humming, inchoate vocalisation and flapping) than usual before he finally settled down to sleep.  For the first time in years I sat and lay on the bed talking with him to try and calm him down.

Every now and again when he’s on his laptop he'll give a sudden howl of anguish.  When I go to investigate he’s watching some online news channel.

I am powerless to stop him, or to give him much comfort.

Compared to what thousands of people are going through our pain is minimal.

But it’s real pain nonetheless.

Recycling

From Facebook Archives

26 February 2019 at 17:11 ·

Today's theme has been recycling.
Last week Mrs Leftfoot had a clear out and gave me over a dozen empty Quality St/Celebrations/similar tubs.  Today I took them to college, where Ferretfingers was doing art, because I knew Mrs Bun would be there, dropping off her son, and could use them.  She was delighted as she uses them for carting about the lovely cakes she makes.

I mentioned Mrs Quilt was looking for bits of broken terracotta pot or roof tiles for a garden project.
"There's been a pile of old slate in our back alley for weeks, I'll ask about them."
Half an hour later she was back and we shifted a large Ikea bag load of slate from her boot to mine.

I phoned Mrs Quilt and after college drove down to hers where Mr Quilt and Ferretfingers unloaded them into her garden.
I came away with a book of patterns and 4 balls of red tinsel yarn for LDNE's knit'n'natter group (they'll be stored in the cupboard until Christmas).
On the way home Ferretfingers and I popped into the Phone Repair Shop on Chilly Rd to see if his ipods could be repaired - or if we could swap them for a new one.
"Cash Converters on Shields Rd is best for that luv" says the lad, who repaired Thunderthighs's tablet last year so we like him.
The ipods will be sorted Thursday (if we're spared).

Mrs Leftfoot  This week Mrs Leftfoot is STILL having a clearout and has found the Sandgate* twizzlers (???).As well as many books, toys, games, clothes, shoes and hundreds of plastic carrier bags of all shapes and sizes.... none of it mine.  l could set up a jumble sale with this lot!

Apparently having a clearout is good for the soul.  Apparently.

What's in a name

It is very disconcerting when the victim in Death In Paradise has exactly the same name as your oldest best friend.

Library Surprise

Today to Hexham so Dr F can continue his pursuit of information about pits.

I sat quietly in the Local Studies section writing a letter while he rootled about.

He comes up chortling with a copy of "Water Beetles of Northumbria by Dr Fester et al".
"Class library" he says triumphantly "and somebody even borrowed it in 2001!"

Sandy  Have they got Fly Fishing by JR Hartley?
Fay  It is great that Fester is doing all that work on recording pits; all that information would be lost otherwise and will be invaluable to future historians.

Karma

Karma in action?
In the past couple of weeks I've spent £20 on raffle tickets for various cancer research and care charities.
This morning a kindly aunt sent me £20 for “half term treats for the boys”.
As Mum used to say
"Cast your bread upon the waters and it comes back wet."

Day train trip to Scarborough.

Dr F loves a cliff lift.

The wind did magnificent things to the beard.

But he had a fish dinner and a lemon top ice cream so he was happy.

Salisbury

Back in 2019 we used the February half term holiday to visit out newest relation, a great-niece, in Bournemouth and took a trip to Salisbury.

21 February 2019
In May 1956 my family was posted to RAF Netheravon.
In the September I was born in Tidworth Military Hospital and Christened atAmesbury in October.
This is the closest I've been to there since the summer of 1958, when Dad retired from the RAF after 24 years' service.

Another in the series "Thunderthighs regards things that are taller than him"
Salisbury Cathedral.

A most amazing font.
Water pours from the end of each arm of the cross, yet it is still and silent and magically reflective.
Many years ago I nearly drowned myself canoeing/falling into the Ardeche river.
That night I looked at my missal and that inscription was the first line I saw.
Seeing it here (when I was feeling so emotional at an old friend's imminent death) stopped me in my track.
