An Upstanding Member Of The Community!?

From Facebook Archives

7 June at 2025 at 09.56
At Knit'n'natter yesterday...
One of our ladies has broken her ankle and was in a moonboot and using a stick so couldn't sit in her usual place at the far end of the table.
She needed the seat nearest the door; which meant everybody who usually sits on that side of the table had to move, including me.
It was quite interesting really.
I ended up sitting on the other side of the table next to fellow volunteer and board member May.   She trained as a nurse but left nursing to look after her disabled child.
Her son wants to volunteer for St John's Ambulance so, as he is a minor, she has to volunteer with him.
A while ago, having no recent employment referee, she asked me to be one of her character referees.
Yesterday she said "You could sign people's passport photos you know."
 EH?
"Well by dint of being Chair here you're considered an upstanding member of the community."
The ladies were quite startled at how loudly and long I laughed at that.

Letter Kwikfit Birthday Tea

From Facebook Archives

6 June 2009 at 09:57

I've just found and read a letter from Mum dated 7 May 1993.
Ms Exlibris  I bet that was an emotional moment..
Bentonbag  It was, especially as it was written before Alzheimer's got its teeth into her.  But it was strangely comforting as well because for a moment she was back with me as she really was when she had all her faculties.

My car's been lying to me again.
Brake pads worn warning light, bleeper
"contact garage" message.
Off to Kwik Fit.
Nothing wrong with them.
Loose wire taped up.
No charge.
Good lads.

We're back and, when we've finished Fester's birthday tea, I shall be making an album of the latest Scottish trip photos.
He's 65 today and was worried about celebrating because of what happened when he turned 60 (his brother Stephen died). But so far so good ...
Mrs Poet  welcome back!
Mr Monkshood  Wish him happy birthday from me please Ben.
Sheffield Cousin  Wish him a happy birthday from us in Sheffield. Didn't realise it was today; my Mam (his Aunt Gladys) would have been 100 today.
Mrs Banjoman  Wish him a happy birthday from my husband and me as well please.
Mrs Leftfoot  Happy Birthday, Fester.  Hope you've all had a good day. X
Burney  Please say happy birthday from me and give him a big cuddle. Say hullo to the boys as well from me.
The Late  Happy birthday Fester

It's Fester's birthday today.
Being Wednesday Thunderthighs is at college this afternoon so we did the Tesco/big shop after dropping Ferretfingers off at Norham first thing this morning.
When we got home Thunderthighs  suggested he come home early so he could "help with birthday tea".
We said no and he had to stay until 4.
His reply "If college had a motto it would be 'We'll keep you here until rush hour!'"

Foul Word

From Facebook Archives

5 June 2025 at 15.48

Typing up minutes and Word keeps putting indents in where I don't want them
"Twatt! F*CK! Bastard!"
A sleepy voice from the other half reclining in the bedroom.
"Eh, what?"
"Not you."
"Oh that's ok then."
Says a lot about our marriage.

Christmas Preparations

From Facebook Archives

4 June 2024 at 19.10

The Christmas knitting has commenced.
I've set myself the task of making a Knitivity, or at least completing the one Carey started and had to give up on due to failing eyesight.
She's done most of Mary and Joseph, six arms and legs and some other bits of Shepherds.
The pattern is a bit beige and I decided there should be a bit more diversity in the three kings (as LD:NorthEast's staff and clients are diverse).
Here are Caspar, Balthazaar and Melchior to represent Northern European, African and Asian people (admittedly I shall have to do something about Balthazaar's bizarre beard).
The next bit of the project will be the three shepherds.
Mrs Lasagne  So cute
Mrs Bun  They look great. Leave the beard it's fabulous. X
Mrs Bursar  Is that you thinking about Christmas?!
Bentonbag  Mary, Joseph, 3 shepherds, 3 kings, an angel, a sheep (or two), donkey, camel, manger and baby Jesus take some knitting ... Once we'd stopped doing Easter bunnies at knit'n'natter we started on snowmen for Xmas, but we've been sidetracked into baby hats for hospitals.

I once commented to Mrs Bursar that she was planning Christmas things a bit early: such remarks are seldom forgotten.

Everything Carey made she put into little zip-freezer bags with the contents written on the label.  “Kings: 6 arms 6 legs” was a little offputting

The knitivity was finally given to LDNE for Christmas 2025.  This was because every swaddled baby Jesus I made looked like a maggot.  Friends told me this was normal.  Mrs Quilt finally came to my rescue by knitting a tiny nappied baby Jesus that I made a little nightie for.
