Beware of the Bounce

When he read in my last blog that Tyne Bridge Morris’ website no longer existed Sheamus Murphy kindly found it for me on an archive site (no idea) and sent me the link, allowing me to recover what I’d written.

This item also appeared in the Open Morris organisation’s publication Dancing On sometime around the Millennium.

BEWARE OF THE BOUNCE or The Problems of Busting Out All Over

When - more years ago than I care to remember - I first started Cotswold Morris dancing I was young, fit and a good deal slimmer than now.

Even in those days I knew the comfort to be gained from “good firm support”.

Seventies feminism was all very well, but there are parts of a girl’s body that get uncomfortable unsupported under action.

In 1990 I joined Sandgate Clog Morris and realised that a sports bra was essential.

Four years later I had my first baby and will never forget my first post-partum practice.

A nursing bra is great for quick access when breastfeeding - useless for support when clog dancing.  I thought I was going to black my eyes.  So I gave up dancing, put on weight and had another baby.

After three years away I knew if I didn’t start doing something for myself again I’d commit infanticide or suicide.  So, spurred on by encouragement from Mrs Leftfoot, I joined Tyne Bridge Morris (now containing the relicts of Sandgate).

There’s also the point that boobs bouncing in all directions, not necessarily in time to the music is most distracting for a male audience.  My partner complains that with some of the more generously endowed women’s teams it’s impossible for the average red-blooded male to concentrate on the dancing.  Their eyes keep being dragged in terrible fascination away from the feet or the general choreography, inexorably back to the chest areas of the dancers.  Being sensitive, politically correct Guardian readers many morris men find this upsetting if not to say distressing - or so I’m told.  I’m not one to pander to male sensitivities (or I’d never have started dancing), their proclivities are their problem, but it is a point to consider if you’re the shy, retiring type.

Sports bras are all well and good, but some are better than others.  Each maker has slightly different designs so it may take a few attempts to find the right one for you.  It’s not just a matter of getting the right chest and cup size, sometimes it’s where the straps lie vis-à-vis your back and shoulders..

One of the bug-bears of my post-pubescent life has been sliding bra-straps.  Within two wearings most bras’ straps start heading down my arm and try to cut it off when I lift my arm quickly.  What’s worse is if the strap slips, the cup follows, and next thing you know out comes Charlie.  Then you lift your arm, or try and tug the strap back up, and very nearly do a diy mastectomy.  It’s very distracting, and I have enough to worry about remembering where I should be in the dance.  With hanky dances you can get away with quickly slipping your hand in your blouse to pull them back into place.

But not with sticks.

And certainly not with garlands.

But now I’m sorted - I’ve been to see Sadie the Bra Lady (of Consett, Sunderland and Ashington).  I first heard of her from an exceedingly well endowed friend, also met her at a business lunch and know she’s positively evangelical about getting the right fitting bra.  One of her sayings is”Give me a girl from the age of 12 and she’ll never droop”.

I went along in June to the Ashington shop to get a new bra for the summer season.

Unlike even the best department stores (which I’ve tried) Sadie has every size of bra in every cup size and firmness available.  And she won’t sell you a bra that doesn’t fit the bill.

It wasn’t Sadie’s day for the Ashington shop but a very nice, matronly, well upholstered lady took charge of me.  All Sadie’s ladies are trained in her methods, and can tell your size just by looking at you.;

“Slip your top off dear.  What size do you think you are?” she was standing behind me, both of us looking in the mirror.

I explained what I needed.

“Hmm- I’ll get you the 3 and 4 firmness fit dear.”

Off she went and a few minutes later came back with bras two inches and a cup size bigger than I’d said in the Anna Kornikova; only the balls should bounce; range.

We tried the 3, I did some rants and skips.

“Hmm - you’re right dear - you do need the full impact force 4.”

It was and is perfect.

Beautiful wide straps with no strap slippage and everything stays roughly where it should when I’m dancing.

True the front comes halfway up to my neck, a little disconcerting at first, but that’s a small price to pay for the comfort.  As was £26 - which didn’t really bust the bank for such service.

So ladies - if you find yourself within striking distance of Ashington, Consett or Sunderland* it really is worth a visit to Sadie the Bra Lady. Look her up on the internet www.sadiethebralady.com.

I’m never going anywhere else again.

*Sadie The Bra Lady’s stores are now in Consett, Sunderland and Darlington.

My Bosom's A Wild Rover

In my previous blog I was going to put a link to TyneBridge Morris website where there are a few pages containing some stuff wot I wrote.  However the website no longer exists so I’ve had to prepare this from memory.  It is sung to the tune “I’ve been a wild rover”.

I’ve been a clog dancer for many’s the year

And my body has felt the effects of good beer,

But now when my clog hits the dance floor

My bosom won’t stay where it used to before

Chorus

So it’s off to Sadie’s

Sadie’s Ladies’ bra store

Sadie The Bra Lady

At her nearest store

When I was side stepping I found that my chest

Would go half to the East and half to the West,

While skipping just made me feel down in the mouth

As one headed North while the other went South.

Chorus

A nice lady took me to the back of the shop

And looked at my bosom while I had a hop

She said “We have just what you need in the store,

A thirty eight E in full impact force four.”

Chorus

I put on the bra and did a hop or three

And my bosom stayed just where it ought to be

They both moved together, but not very far,

In a perfectly fitted and comfortable bra

So hats off to Sadie

I will go evermore

To Sadie The Bra Lady

At her nearest store.

My Cup Runneth Over

Sometimes when I ask my friends for information I get more than I bargained for.

Ladies (and interested gents) I find myself in need of a strapless bra/basque - any recommendations outside Sadie the Bra Lady - preferably in easy reach of Benton.

DE I get mine from bra-visimo in elfin garden they are very good
Goddaughter Bravissimo
DE I meant in eldon square ha ha x
Bentonbag I like the idea of shopping in Elfin Gardens.
Do you think they'd have a branch of British Gnome Stores or Fairywicks?
Pinkitchen Simply Be in the metro?
Hagrid I'm absolutely confounded, so there is more than just "over the shoulder boulder holder" types? Fascinating! Good luck with your search :-)
Bentonbag Hagrid, purely in the interest of education, may I point you in the direction of  sadiethebralady.com
Mercykitchen I work for Simply Be in the Metro Centre. We specialise in bra fitting and go from a 34C to a 50L. The strapless bra we have in store is absolutely awful but they do have basques, strapless bras etc etc on their website. You could always order a couple and see how you get on? xx
Ms Telyn Definitely bravissimo, and I like the idea of elfin gardens too. Do you need an underskirt as well, or would that be tutu much....
Bentonbag Ms Telyn No - but I do have a thing to show you that I need an opinion on ;)
Sandy funnily enough Ben I am also without a strapless bra or a basque, I'm afraid I have no advice to give on this matter :-(
Bentonbag Your wardrobe is sadly lacking Mr Sandy
Shipskitchen When shopping for one for a certain lady, I was sent to Fenwicks kitchen dept. They thought I'd said "basket!"
Bess Cavalier Speaking as a female, you can never have too many baskets!

I did in fact buy an excellent strapless bra from Sadie The Bra Lady's store in Ashington.

To Parent's Evening where they all said variations on  "Thunderthighs is a lovely lad except for his outburst when things get too much for him, and inappropriate language."

His/our favourite teacher said

"I'll be working on that with him."

I wished him luck with that - I've been working on that with father for two decades ...

FifiD  Hahaha! They say men don't ever grow up... Save your energy B!! Xx

Henlady  Heehee, chip off the old block !
Bess Cavalier  It's a man thing - happens in our house all the time, particularly when they can't find something, usually followed by me saying "you mean the xxxx that's on the dining room table / on the bookshelf / under the stairs ..."

Getting Sorted

From Facebook archives

2 July 2013 at 20:07

About 18 months ago work started on the loft extension and the contents of the airing cupboard was stuffed in suitcases and bags and put in the boys' room.

Then Littlebrother died and over the next six months much of the contents of Fester’s childhood home came up here and got stashed in the living room and boys' bedroom. There was only a walkway to the beds and wardrobe.

There was a wall of boxes in the living room and I once described it as
“like Steptoe’s but without the stuffed bear or skeleton.”

Last October the loft was completed and Thunderthighs went up into his own penthouse, with a brand new bed. His old bed got used as a dumping ground which gave us a bit more elbow room.

Then I got the airing cupboard back so all the towels and bedding could go away.

Last week, at the ceremony where we scattered Littlebrother’s ashes, various friends took treasured momentos (mainly teeshirts) emptying a box or two.

Today I had a concerted sort and shift.

Empty boxes and ikea bags full of spare pillows and other stuff have been put on the top bunk above Ferretfingers' bed and the spare bed is back to being a bed.
The boys’ room is back to being a bedroom again!
So I can now offer a guest a bed in a room.
And I have somewhere to go when the snoring gets too much; rather than camping on the floor in another room.

It's been a long time coming.

Very therapeutic !

After all that, as I was dusting off my hands and looking around in quiet satisfaction,

Thunderthighs lumbers in and says wistfully "I miss this room" ...

On the Boils (or Why We Love the NHS)

On a particularly hot and humid Saturday a couple of weekends ago Thunderthighs took himself up to Morpeth, explored around the old castle mounds, and fell in a nettle patch.

That evening he complained that his belly was sore, and by Sunday lunchtime he moaned and yelped every time he sat down, or stood up.  There were two nasty red areas in the crease on either side of his belly button, where his trousers’ waist belt bands had rubbed.  We told him to put Sudocreme on them.

Things were just as bad, if not worse, on the Monday morning.

I took some photos and at 08.30 emailed our GP

Good Morning

Please see the attached photos I've just taken of Thunderthighs' belly, it is where his trouser waistband rubs.

He started complaining of soreness on Saturday evening and, thinking it was a sweat rash we told him to put Sudocreme on it.

He tells us it now hurts every time he moves, particularly bending and stretching.

I fear he may be developing boils or a carbuncle - having had them myself in the past.

I'd be most grateful if you could phone us on <<landline and mobile numbers redacted>>.

Or I could bring/send him up to the surgery if you think it would be wiser to examine him.

Thank you

Within an hour I received the following reply.

Hi

I have saved these pictures to Thunderthighs' record, please can you telephone the surgery to book a telephone consultation with a Doctor to review these pictures and further advise course of action. Face to face appointments can only be booked at the request of the Doctor following an initial telephone triage, so this would follow on if the Doctor wishes to examine him.

Many thanks

The Receptionist

I phoned and Dr L phoned back at about half past ten.  I put the phone on loudspeaker so she could speak to me and Thunderthighs simultaneously.  Dr L emailed a prescription for antibiotics to our local pharmacy, we picked them up mid-afternoon and he’d taken two by bedtime.

On Tuesday afternoon I was on the phone to Bigsister when Thunderthighs burst into the bedroom with an “I stink!” which could be heard in London.

Resisting the temptation to make any unkind comment, or comparison to his father,

I ended the phone call and attended to him.

It’s a good think I’ve got a strong stomach …

At 5pm I emailed an updated photo

FTAO Dr L

Hi

The thing on Thunderthighs' tummy has popped of its own accord.  A lot of bloody pus came out and it smelled quite unpleasant.  I've wiped it clean with cotton wool and warm water and covered it with an absorbent dressing to keep it clean.  There is a hole and I suspect more pus down there.

Any advice on what to do next would be most appreciated.

Many thanks

Within a few minutes a reply came

Hello Ben

Thank you for email, will pass to Dr on call as Dr L is not available and not on duty tomorrow

The Receptionist

I didn't expected to hear anything until the following morning

But at 6.45pm Dr F phoned, she does the boys’ annual medicals so knows us well.

We decided the best course would be to keep it clean and covered with absorbent dressings (which we have in the house), keep an eye on it until the antibiotics run out, but to phone if the redness came back.

Thunderthighs didn’t go on his work-experience on Wednesday or gym session on Thursday as everything was still a bit sore.  But he did go to work experience on Friday and in the evening declared an intention to go out for the day on Saturday.  I suggested that might not be wise as the second boil was coming to a head and he’d want to be near home if it burst.

“What do you mean!?!  I can’t go to Sunderland with stilton coming out of my third belly button!!”

It’s a good thing my chair has arms or I’d have fallen out laughing.

On Monday, as the course of antibiotics was coming to an end, I emailed:-

FTAO Dr F or Dr L

Hello

Please find attached photos of Thunderthighs' stomach this morning.

The second boil burst overnight Friday/Saturday.  There doesn't appear to be any more stuff to come out of it.  The skin looks a little red but is not hot or inflamed.  He says it hurts sometimes, but he's not making much of a fuss and is comfortable enough to wear jeans.

He has one more antibiotic to take.

Any advice?  Does he need more antibiotics or should we wait and see?

<<landline number redacted>>  is the best to reach both of us, but if we don't need to talk an email will suffice.

Many thanks

Dr L phoned and we agreed that he should finish the course, to keep an eye on things and if the boils returned she would see him in the flesh.

But every cloud has a silver lining.

All his life Thunderthighs’ underlying autistic anxiety has caused him to be constipated.

But yesterday morning he came in from his paper round and announced

"Since the boils my poos have become softer and more frequent and I don't trust my farts any longer"!

The antibiotics have obviously given his gut biomes a bit of a shake up.

Pity it’s unlikely to last after they’ve left his system.
