Gardening

During our annus horribilis of 2012 we had a loft extension, which involved lots of bits of scaffolding, steelwork and other builders’ paraphernalia being left on the lawn for months on end.  Mowing really wasn’t feasible.  Many weekends were spent sorting Fester’s family home in Sheffield following Littlebrother’s sudden death, so any sort of gardening got put on the back burner.

But as Spring turned into Summer in 2013 I turned back to the garden again…

Having sorted out the garden table, replacing the top with the door the building inspector rejected as not fireproof enough for the loft (Will Fixit had cut a corner off to fit so no use for anywhere else), I have now planted cut-and-come-again lettuce, cabbage, beetroot, dill and wallflower seeds - and a home-made package of seeds I found in Sheffield marked "MIXED FREE". Tiny seeds so goodness knows what will come up.

Indoors we have basil and cherry and plum tomato seeds planted in pots on the front windowsill (aka the greenhouse).

A lot of the seeds are old and/or freebies so we shall see.

I've also take some sage cuttings.

We've finally emptied the potato pots and tubs and Fester has turned half the crop into potato salad for this evening's tea.  Ferretfingers helped me shovel the old compost onto the bed and into other pots, filling them to overflowing.

The lawn is bald in many places, a foot tall in others and covered in all sorts of crap from the building work and everything at the sides is leggy and overgrown, but I really haven't the hwyl or the energy to tackle it today.

I am now going to soak in the bath for half an hour in a bid not to get too stiff or achy.

Miss Fiddle   You’ve been busy!
Drummerman  Should we see you as an earth mother, or Felicity Kendall?
Bentonbag   Earth Mother definitely.  The comparison to Felicity Kendall is flattering but utterly inaccurate.
Drummerman  Damn, there goes another fantasy. (Actually, Earth Mother’s OK).
Henlady  My hens do a wonderful job keeping the lawn neatly and organically mowed and fertilised- but they also eat everything in sight = so no veg.
