As they were growing up, in Annual Reviews, I was told it’s a good thing that the boys are able and willing to prepare food for themselves.
It’s
a mark of independence.
It’s
a mark of independence they’ve had since they were quite young, when they
realised that at weekends there was not much point in waiting for Mummy or
Daddy to get up and make breakfast for them (I call it benign neglect).
So
they learnt to prepare cereal in a bowl, and to use the toaster.
Now they are in their twenties they both now also prepare their own packed lunch boxes.
I have forced myself to stand back and allow them to chose what goes in, hoping they follow the example of what I used to prepare. There is always a banana, a packet of crisps, a box of apple and blackcurrant juice, something sweet (ideally a breakfast bar) and a sandwich.

Ferretfingers
has a creative line in sandwich fillings:
ham and chocolate mousse or Nutella when available; ham and golden syrup; ham and jam; any other sliced meat as
above; peanut butter ditto.
The
boys mostly use sliced bread, although Ferretfinges has been known to tackle a
loaf …

Ferretfingers
came out of the kitchen this morning with a sandwich he'd cut for himself
(Fester and he got a loaf from Grainger Market yesterday).
One slice of bread and one that redefined the
term 'door stop'.
Not sure how he's
getting his mouth around it.
Kitchen
looks as if it's been visited by a bread shredder.
